คำที่ใช้แทน If หรือเทียบเท่ากับ If

ประโยคเงื่อนไข นอกจากจะใช้ if ขึ้นต้นประโยคแล้วเรายังใช้คำอื่นซึ่งเทียบเท่ากับ if (Words used instead of “if”) ได้ด้วย คำที่ว่านั้นได้แก่

Unless = ถ้า......ไม่ ( = if……not), เว้นแต่ นอกจาก เช่น :

Unless there is some rain, the flowers will die.

( = If there is no rain, the flowers will die.)

ถ้าไม่มีฝน ดอกไม้ก็จะตาย

You will fail unless you study harder.

( = You will fail if you don’t study harder.)

คุณจะสอบไล่ตก ถ้าคุณไม่เรียนให้มากขึ้นกว่านี้

Peter will miss the bus unless he runs.

( = Peter will miss the bus if he doesn’t run.)

ปีเตอร์จะไม่ทันรถบัส ถ้าเขาไม่วิ่งเอา

Unless bad weather stops me, I go for a picnic every Sunday.

ถ้าอากาศเลวไม่ขัดขวางผม ผมออกไปทานข้าวป่าทุกวันอาทิตย์

even if = แม้ว่า, เช่น

Even if I had no money, I wouldn’t borrow any from my friends.

แม้ว่าผมไม่มีเงิน ผมก็จะไม่ยืมเอาจากเพื่อนของผม

Marry never hurries even if she is very late

แมรี่ไม่เคยรีบร้อนเลย แม้นว่าเธอจะสายมากขนาดไหน

นอกจากที่กล่าวมานี้แล้ว คำที่มีความหมายเช่นเดียวกับ if ก็มี เช่น

So long as = ตราบเท่าที่, หากแม้นว่า

Suppose (that) = ถ้าสมมติว่า

Supposing (that), Provided (that) = ในกรณีที่

On condition (that) = ในกรณีที่

in case = ในกรณีที่
