1. Prepositional Phrase (บุรพบทวลี)
ได้แก่ phrase ที่ขึ้นต้นกลุ่มคำด้วยบุรพบท เท่าที่พบเห็นและใช้กันบ่อยได้แก่คำต่อไปนี้

because of เพราะว่า, เนื่องจากว่า

for fear of ด้วยเกรงถึง (การ.........)

by means of โดยทาง

for the sake of เพื่อเห็นแก่

an account of เพราะว่า, เนื่องจาก

for want of เพราะขาด

on (in) behalf of ในนามของ

by dint of เพราะว่า, เนื่องจากว่า

in accordance with ตาม
according to เนื่องจาก, ตาม

in contrast to ตรงกันข้าม

owing to ตาม, ขึ้นอยู่กับ

in spite of ทั้งๆที่

instead to ตาม, ขึ้นอยู่กับ

in the face of เมื่อเผชิญหน้า

in the event of ในเหตุการณ์ที่

in case of ในกรณีที่เกิด

on consequence of เพราะ, เนื่องจาก

Soonthorn was absent from school because of his illness.

สุนทรมาโรงเรียนไม่ได้เพราะเขาไม่สบาย

(because of his illness เป็นบุรพบทวลี ไปทำหน้าที่อย่าง Adverb ขยาย absent)

They could not go anywhere because of the rain.

พวกเขาไม่สามารถไปที่ไหนได้เพราะฝนตก

(because of the rain เป็น บุรพบทวลี มาขยายกริยา could not go)

in spite of being late, he went to class.

ทั้งๆที่สายแล้ว เขาก็ยังไปเรียนหนังสือ

(in spite of being late เป็นบุรพบทวลี ทำหน้าที่อย่าง Adverb ไปขยายกริยา went)

ข้อสังเกต : ถ้ากลุ่มคำบุรพบทวลีวางอยู่หน้าประโยคนิยมใส่ comma เสมอ หากอยู่ท้ายประโยค ไม่ต้องใส่

comma เช่น

They remained in their tents in consequence of the bad weather. (In consequence of the bad weather, they remained in their tents)

พวกเขายังอยู่ที่เต้นท์ เพราะอากาศ (ข้างนอก) ไม่ดี
