5. คุณศัพท์ที่แสดงความเป็นเจ้าของ (Possessive Adjective) หมายถึง คำคุณศัพท์ที่ใช้ขยายนามเพื่อบอกความเป็นเจ้าของของนามได้แก่
    My (ของฉัน)          his (ของเขา)
    her (ของหล่อน)      its (ของมัน)
    Our (ของเรา)         Your (ของท่าน)
    Their (ของพวกเขา)
ตัวอย่างการใช้
     My book          หนังสือของฉัน
     Your key          กุญแจของคุณ
     Her birthday     วันเกิดของเธอ
     Their house      บ้านของพวกเขา

6. ปฤจฉาคุณศัพท์ (Interrogative Adjective)
     คือ คำคุณศํพท์ที่ใช้ขยายนามเพื่อให้เป็นคำถาม โดยจะวางไว้ต้นประโยคและมีนามตามหลังเสมอ ได้แก่ What, Which, Whose
ตัวอย่างการใช้
     What color does she like?          เธอชอบสีอะไร?
     Which one do you want?           คุณต้องการอันไหน?
     Whose house is this?                 บ้านหลังนี้เป็นของใคร?
7. คุณศัพท์บอกปริมาณ (Quantitative Adjective)
     หมายถึง การใช้คำเพื่ออธิบายปริมาณของสิ่งของนั้นๆ เป็นลักษณะการบอกปริมาณแบบคร่าวๆ ไม่ได้ระบุเจาะจงถึงนามตัวใดตัวหนึ่ง เช่น enough (เพียงพอ), much (มาก), some (พอมีบ้าง), all (ทั้งหมด), many (มาก), any (บ้าง), great (มาก), few (สองสาม), whole (ทั้งหมด) เป็นต้น

ตัวอย่างการใช้
I'm so much in love.          ฉันตกหลุมรักอย่างจังเลยล่ะ
Tony did not give any money to his father.          โทนี่ไม่ได้ให้เงินแก่พ่อแม่ของเขา
8. คุณศัพท์จำแนก (Distributive Adjective)
     คือ คำคุณศัพท์ที่ไปขยายนามที่เป็นเอกพจน์และคำนามนับได้เพื่อแยกนามออกจากกันเป็นส่วนๆ โดยวางไว้หน้าคำนามเสมอ เช่น Each (แต่ละ) either (หรือย่างนี้ หรืออย่างนั้น) neither (ไม่ใช่อย่างนี้ ไม่ใช่อย่างนั้น)
ตัวอย่างการใช้
     Every girls came to this class.     เด็กผู้หญิงทุกคนเข้าเรียนชั้นนี้
     Each soldiers were exhausted.     ทหารแต่ละคนรู้สึกอ่อนเพลีย
9. คุณศัพท์เน้นความ (Emphasizing Adjective)
     คือ คุณศัพท์เน้นความ หมายถึง คุณศัพท์ที่ใช้ขยายนามเพื่อเน้นความให้มีน้ำหนักขึ้นได้แก่ own (เอง), very (นั้น, นั้นเอง, นั้นจริงๆ), complete (ทั้งหมด), utter (ทั้งหมด), absolute (แท้จริง)
ตัวอย่างการใช้
     Ken is my own boyfriend.
     เคนเป็นแฟนของฉันเอง (เน้นว่าของเธอ)

     She is an absolute teacher.
     เธอช่างเป็นครูอย่างแท้จริง (เน้นว่าอย่างแท้จริง)
10. คุณศัพท์บอกอุทาน (Exclamatory Adjective)
     หมายถึง คุณศัพท์ที่ใช้ขยายเพื่อให้เป็นคำอุทานได้แก่ what
ตัวอย่างการใช้
     What genius!     ฉลาดอะไรอย่างนี้เนี่ย
     What an idea!    ความคิดอะไรกันเนี่ย
11. คุณศัพท์สัมพันธ์ (Relative Adjective)
     หมายถึง คุณศัพท์ที่ใช้ขยายนามที่ตามหลังและในขณะเดียวกันก็ยังทำหน้าที่คล้ายสันธานเชื่อมความในประโยคของตัวเอง กับ ประโยคข้างหน้าให้สัมพันธ์กันอีกด้วย ได้แก่ Whatever (อะไรก็ได้) Whichever (อันไหนก็ได้)
ตัวอย่างการใช้
     I always want whichever you do not want.
     ฉันต้องการในสิ่งใดก็ตามที่คุณไม่ต้องการเสมอ ๆ
         
            คำคุณศัพท์ที่อยู่หน้านามและขยายนามนั้นโดยตรง เรียกว่า "Used attributively" ใช้อย่างคุณศัพท์ขยายนามโดยตรง คำคุณศัพท์ที่อยู่หลังกริยา เรียกว่า "Used predicatively" ใช้หลังกริยา แต่ยังคงเป็นคุณศัพท์ที่ขยายนามที่มาก่อนข้างหน้าเสมอไป

    ม็อกซ์ แมวมหัศจรรย์ของผม ชอบอ่านหนังสือ ผมใช้เวลาสอนแค่สองสัปดาห์ มันก็อ่านหนังสือได้คล่องแคล่ว ม็อกซ์เริ่มต้นอ่านนิทานต่างๆในห้องของผมก่อน เมื่ออ่านนิทานจนหมดมันก็อ่านหนังสือเรียนของผม และในที่สุด หลังจากที่อ่านหนังสือทุกเล่มในห้อง มันก็อ่านพจนานุกรมฉบับรชบัณฑิตยสถานที่คุณปู่คุณย่าให้เป็นของขวัญวันเกิดผม มันตั้งหน้าตั้งตาอ่าน ตั้งแต่หน้าแรกจนหน้าสุดท้าย ใช้เวลาหลายวันทีเดียว

    ผมไม่เคยนึกเลยว่าการอ่านพจนานุกรมของม็อกซ์ จะมีประโยชน์ในเวลาต่อมา

    บ่ายวันเสาร์ผมกลับมาจากซ้อมบอล ม็อกซ์วิ่งมารับผมที่หน้าประตูบ้าน วิ่งพันแข้งพันขา ดีใจที่เห็นผม

     ผมเห็นแม่นั่งคุยอยู่กับหญิงคนหนึ่งที่ม้านั่งหินในสนามหน้าบ้าน ผู้หญิงคนนั้นอายุราวๆ ห้าสิบปี ใส่เสื้อกระโปรงชุดสีเทาน่าเบื่อ ดูเหมือนอาจารย์ที่โรงเรียน ผมตั้งใจจะเดินหลบเข้าไปบ้าน แต่แม่กวักมือเรียกให้ผมเข้าไปหา ผมต้องจำยอมเดินเข้าไป มีม็อกซ์ตามมาติดๆ

    ผมยืนอยู่ข้างหลังเก้าอี้ของพ่อ ถือโอกาสอ่านตามไปด้วย

    จิตราเพื่อนพี่ เขาลงมาธุระที่กรุงเทพฯ พี่เลยฝากเขาให้ถือจดหมายมาถึงน้อง พี่ไม่ค่อยสบาย ลงมาไม่ไหว หมอเขาไม่อนุญาติให้พี่ไปไหนเลย พี่เจ็บกระเสาะกระแสะมาเรื่อยๆ เป็นหลายโรค เบื่อตัวเองเต็มที ตอนนี้คุณพิภพสามีพี่เขาเพิ่งเกษียน ก็เกิดเจ็บขึ้นมาอีกคน พี่ละเกรงใจเธอจริงๆ แต่ไม่รู้จะหันหน้าไปพึ่งใคร ญาติๆ พี่ทางนี้เขาก็คงรำคาญพี่เต็มทีแล้ว ไม่เคยมาเยี่ยมเราเลย แต่นั่นละ เพราะเราก็รบกวนเขาเรื่องเงินๆ ทองๆ อยู่เรื่อย พี่สังเกตุว่าเขาไม่อยากพบหน้าเราแล้ว เวลาไปหา เด็กคนใช้ก็ว่าไม่อยู่บ้าน

    พ่ออ่านจดหมายจบแล้วก็ถอนใจ ลุกขึ้นไปไขกุญแจลิ้นชักตู้เอกสารข้างโต๊ะทำงาน ผมรู้ว่านั่นเป็นที่เก็บเงินของพ่อกับแม่

   ม็อกซ์ กระโดดขึ้นมาบนโต๊ะทำงานพ่อ อ่านจดหมายทันที พออ่านจบ มันส่งโทรจิตบอกผมว่า

    "บอกพ่ออย่าให้เงินไปน่ะ"

    "อ้าว ทำไมล่ะ"

    "ป้าโสมไม่ได้ส่งเขามาหาแม่หรอก นี่ไม่ใช่จดหมายของป้าโสมแน่ๆ ป้าจิตราคงจะเขียนเอง คงจะมาหลอกเอาเงินไป"

    "แกรู้ได้ไง"

    "ก็แม่บอกว่าป้าโสมเป็นครูสอนภาษาไทย ถ้าป้าโสมเขียนจดหมายจริงๆ จะสะกดผิดเยอะแยะแบบนี้เหรอ"

    ผมอ่านจดหมายซ้ำอีกที คราวนี้อ่านช้าๆ อย่างตั้งใจ จึงเห็นคำสะกดผิดหลายแห่ง ทำให้ผมเชื่อม็อกซ์ แมวมหัศจรรย์ของผมเสียแล้วสิ

    แล้วคุณล่ะ เห็นที่ผิดบ้างไหม

How useful is the dictionary (chapter 5)

Mox, my wonder cat, loved reading. It took me only two weeks to teach him how to read. He started with the children books in my room, and after finished them all, he read my textbooks. Finally, after reading all the books in my room, he started the dictionary, a birthday present from my grandparents. It took him several days to finish the dictionary, cover to cover.

I never thought that Mox's dictionary reading would be useful.

Yet one Saturday afternoon, as I returned from the soccer practice, Mox ran to greet me at the gate, rubbing against my leg, happy to see me home.

I saw Mom chatting with another woman on a stone bench in the front garden. Thai woman was about fifty years old. She was wearing a boring grey dress, looking like my teachers at school. I tried to sneak into the house, but unfortunately Mom saw me and called me over. I obediently walked towards them with Mox on my heels.

"Nick, come and say hello to Aunt Jitra. She is a friend of Aunt Som, my friend who teaches in Pisanulok. Aunt Jitra is doing some business in Bangkok, and she brought me a letter from Aunt Som."

I paid respect to Aunt Jitra. She raised her hands to acknowledge me gently.

"Wow, what a handsome and polite son you have! I'm delighted to meet him. I 'll teel Som about him."

Mom haned me folded piece of blue paper.

"Take this to your Dad, please. He's inside the house. Tell him I'd like him to read it immediately."

I took the letter to Dad who was busy working. However, when I told him what Mom said, he read the letter right away. Dad was also obedient to Mom.

I stood behind Dad's chair, reading the letter over his shoulders.

Dear Nanta,

    As my friend. Jitra, has some business to attend to in Bangkok, I asked her to bring this letter to you. I haven't been well for a while; I can't come to see you myself. The docter didn't allow me to travel. I have been ill for many years, having suffered from many diseases. I am so bored with myself. Recently Pipob, my husband, who is now retired, has been sick too.

    I don't want to bother you, but I don't have anyone else to turn to. All my relatifs here are fed up with me. They don't visit us anymore. I guess because we borrowed a lot of money from them. Now I notice that whenever we go to their houses, the servants always sya they are not at home. I'm sure they don't want to see us anymore.

    I am in deep trubles. I need money for medicin and docter's fee, both for myself and for Pipob. Please help me. Think about our past. I would like to borrow ifve thousand baht. It will help me through untill the next month salary comes out. Then I will pay you back in instalment. Please give Jitra the money so that I will have it soon.

    Nanta you are my only hope. Please don't let me down.

After he finished the letter, Dad sighed, got up and went straight to the cabinet next to the desk. He inserted a key into the top drawer. I know that drawer was the place where my parents kept their cash.
Mox jumped up onto Dad's desk. He read the letter and suddenly sent me a telepathy message.
'Tell Dad not to give that woman the money!'
'Why not?'
'Aunt Som didn't send the letter herself. Certainly this isn't Aunt Som's letter. Aunt Jitra must have written it herself. It's a scam.'
'How do you know that?'
'Did Mom say that Aunt Som was a teacher? If she had written the letter, would she have made a lot of misspellings like this?'
I read the letter again. This time more slowly. I saw so many mistakes that I believed Mox, my wonder cat.

                                           Cat Neutering (Chapter 4)

Dad was the first to mention that my cat, Mox was different from other tomcats. He said it was usual for a tomcat to piss in the house to mark out his territory. But Mox never did this. He always did number 1 or 2 in a vacant lot not far from our house.

Mom joined in, saing that shee too was puzzled by Mox's behavior. Usually a tom did not spent so much time at home. He liked wander around, tracking down a female, and fighting neighboring toms for her. My Mox never got tangled in these troubles. He never crawled ack home covered with wounds like the tomcats that my parents had before. My parents ended the conservation with a question. "Mox wasn't neutered. Why does he act like a neutered tom? That's strange, isn't it?"

'What is neutering?' asked Mox when we were alone in my room.

    I was surprised a his question since I believed Mox, my wonder cat, was very intelligent. He should have known this word. Meanwhile, I felt embarrassed to explain it; I considered it an off-limits topic.



    I forgot that Mox could read my mind.
    'Why is it an off-limits topic? If it's off-limits, why is it done to a cat?' asked Mox. His short round face covered with grey and white hair was full of curiosity.
    I was thinking hard, trying to find a way to explain this sensitive issue to Mox, But I had no idea. I turned on the computer, surfed the web, and finally found a cat manual on the Association of Cat Owners' homepage. I read and summarized it for Mox.
    'Mox, I don't know anything about the cats in your world, but the cats here on Earth, both toms and queens, when they grow up, they want to have kittens, and will pee all around the house. Sometimes he poops and doesn't cover the pile.
He'll wander away from home, searching for females day and night. He'll fight with other toms over them. The scuffles are really noisy. As for the queen, when she comes into season, she'll call out loudly for tomcats, non-stop. The queen can have three pregnancies a year, and can have five or six kittens in each litter. Think, Mox. If some of the cats aren't neutered, the world will be overpopulated with them. We won't be able to care for them all.'
    'Neutering means to prevent male and female cats from having kitten?
    'That's right. And it makes the cats behave better too. Both the tom and the queen. The tom won't pee around the house. The queen won't make her terrible shrilling call. The tomcats won't fight. So they 'll have fewer wounds, fewer inflections and their health will be better too.'
    'How do you neuter the cats?"
    Oh! What a curious cat Mox is!
    I read aloud the message on the computer screen.

A Shoe Doctor

Mox, my Wonder Cat, could remember only his name. He couldn't recall any stories of his life before he came to live with me. I tried asking him several times.
Which planet was he from? Was he from a planet in our solar system or from another galaxy? He had no answer.
I though Mox, my Wonder Cat, had amnesia.
However, sometimes Mox showed some signs that
he could remember something. Nonetheless, his membory seemed useless. For example, once he shouted (though he didn't speak out loud but he sent out into my brain very strong brain waves similar to a shout),
'Cats throughout Chinese history symbolize intelligence, flexibility and a strong will to live.'
"What did you say?" I asked.
'Cats throughout Chinese history symbolize intelligence, flexibility and a strong will to live.'
Finally I realised he was reciting for me what he had learned in the past.
"Oh! Have you been in China before?"
'I have no idea. I have no data on this topic.'
I sighed.
Having a wonder cat at home, but having to keep it a secret was a real pain! Once I took my best friend, Tom, home to meet Mox. I hoped Mox would be able to communicate with him. Mox told me he liked Tom a great deal but Tom's brain
I pressured Mox every day to adjust his brain waves to communicate with other people.
'When are you going to communicate with others? You should talk to my parents soon.'
'I try every day, but haven't succeeded yet.'
Please note that now I was able to 'mind-talk' with Mox via brain waves. I no longer used sound waves. I had to try hard because my parents had been suspicious about why I liked to tale with my cat. They often saw me speak aloud in a conversation as though the cat talking with me.

Mox had been with us for many days. He never created any troubles. Such a smart cat ! Of course, he was truly a wonder cat. He never pooped in the house, or even in our small front garden. He used a vacant lot not far from our house as his public toilet.
However, one day, owing to his memory, Mox caused such damage that Mom almost chased him out of the house.
Mom had just bought a new pair of shoes from a department store, white high heels to wear to a party. Mom tried them on at home first. The heels were almost four inches high. She had to walk very slowly; her hip twisted in a funny way. As I watched, I wondered why Mom tortured herself in this way.
The next evening, dressed in a peach-pink silk dress, Mom was ready to wear her new shoes. Her ear-piercing scream made Dad and me race to her.
Mom pointed to her high heels.
Dark muddy cat prints were all over the white leather.
The bad cat, Mox, was nonchalant. He was busy licking his coat in his basket in the corner.
I rushed for a rag to wipe the dark mud off Mom's white shoes. Yet the cloth could not get rid of the deep scratches in the leather caused by the cat's sharp claws. Mom was so mad at Mox that she almost cried. Since they had to hurry to the party, she did not have time to punish him at once. Mom had to wear an old pair of white pumps to the party instead of the new high heels.
'Mox, why did you scratch Mom's shoes?' I asked as soon as i was alone with him.
'High heels are bad.'
'How?'

An Incredible story

When we were certain that nobody would come and claim the grey tabby that had strayed into our family on my birthday, we decided to give him a name. Dad proposed that we call him Grey, the name we had used earlier. But Mom disagreed. She preferred a cutesier name, such as Tabby, Learn Tail, or Aristocat. I didn’t know how my mother could come up with such weird names! I wanted to call him ‘Gift’ or ‘Present’ since he came to me on my birthday.
We could not agree. So Dad called my cat Grey. Mom temporarily named him Tabby until she could think of something better. And I called him Gift.
We all agreed that our grey tabby was very intelligent because regardless of what name we called him the cat always ran up to the callers.
Das was the first to get up in the morning, so he was the one who gave the cat his morning milk.

“Grey, Grey. Milk is ready,” Dad shouted. The grey tabby jumped right out of his wicker basket bed in the living room and ran straight to the kitchen.

“Tabby, Tabby. Come and eat your dinner.” At night Mom mixed rice with boiled mackerel in a plastic plate, and placed it next to the refrigerator. Suddenly the grey tabby sped from wherever he was, darted through the kitchen door and ate the fish. Mom tried her best to mash the fish meat and blend it with the rice. But Mom’s clever Tabby tried his best too, to pick out and eat only the fish, leaving the rice.

As soon as I arrived home from school, I called out “Gift,” and whistled a signal. Gift streaked up to me and rubbed against my leg.

But one evening the grey tabby almost gave me a heart attack.

I was reading a comic book when Gift jumped up on my lap and said to me,

‘My name is Mox.’

“Y-you… you… c-cam speak!” I stammered with shock and astonishment. Soon I realized that my ear wasn’t picking up a cat voice --- I was hearing its voice in my mind.

‘Yes, I communicate with you through brain waves, not through sound waves.’

The cat could read my mind!

‘Yes, I can read your mind.’

I must be crazy! The cat can speak! The cat can read my mind! What kind of cat can do these things? …Unless it was a dream, I must have been crazy.

    วันเกิดปีนี้ ผมได้แมวเป็นของขวัญ แต่ไม่ใช่ "แมวเอ๋ยแมวเหมียว รูปร่างประเปรียวเป็นนักหนา ร้องเรียกเหมียวเหมียว เดี๋ยวก็มา เคล้าแข้งเคล้าขาน่าเอ็นดู" หรอกนะครับ แมวที่พ่อกับแม่ให้ผมเป็นแมวรูปหล่อทองเหลือง ทำท่ากระโดดจับลูกบอลกลมๆ เล็กๆ ดูมีชีวิตชีวา สวยดี แต่แมวทองเหลืองตัวแข็ง เย็นเฉียบ ไม่ได้มีขนฟู ตัวอบอุ่นเหมือนแมวจริงๆ

    ผมทำท่าตื่นเต้นกับแมวทองเหลืองนิดหน่อย ตอนที่แกะห่อของขวัญแล้วยกเจ้าแมวทองเหลืองออกมาจากกล่อง ผมต้องทำท่าดีใจ เพื่อไม่ให้พ่อแม่เสียใจ

    ตั้มเพื่อนสนิทผม  วันเกิดเขาก่อนหน้าผมสองวัน เขาได้ดาบสตาร์วอส์เป็นของขวัญ ผมเล่าเรื่องนี้ให้พ่อกับแม่ฟังสักสิบหนได้ ทำไมพ่อกับแม่ไม่เข้าใจเลย ว่าผมอยากได้ดาบสตาร์วอส์เหมือนกัน วันเกิดปีนี้ ไม่ใช่แต่ผมที่ผิดหวัง ตั้มเองก็ผิดหวังมากมีดาบอยู่คนเดียว แล้วจะเล่นฟันดาบกับใครล่ะครับ

    ผมทิ้งแมวทองเหลืองไว้บนหลังตู้ในห้องนั่งเล่นข้างล่าง เดินหงอยๆกลับขึ้นมาห้องนอน นั่งที่โต๊ะทำงาน สมุดการบ้านภาษาอังกฤษยังเปิดกางไว้บนโต๊ะ ผมมองดูอย่างเบื่อๆ  การบ้าน  ทำเท่าไรไม่เคยหมดเสียที พวกเราเบื่อทำจะตาย แต่คุณครูไม่ยักเบื่อตรวจ  ยังให้การบ้านนักเรียนทำอยู่เรื่อยๆ ทุกวัน

    "แครกๆ"

    เสียงอะไรเกามุ้งลวดหน้าต่าง ผมเอี้ยวตัวไปมอง ที่ขอบหน้าต่าง มีแมวขนสั้นเกรียน สีขาวลายเทายืนเบียดติดมุ้งลวดอยู่เสียงแกรกๆ คือเสียงอุ้งตีนของมันขูดกับมุ้งลวด

    ผมเปิดหน้าต่างมุ้งลวด แมวลายสีเทาตัวผอมๆ หางเรียวยาวกระโดดเข้ามาในห้องทันที แล้วจัดแจงเดินมาเคล้าแข้งเคล้าขาผม เหมือนอย่างที่แมวทั้งหลายชอบทำ

    ผมอุ้มแมวเทาขึ้นมาดู สำรวจแล้วรู้ว่ามันเป็นแมวตัวผู้ หน้าตาหล่อเหลาไม่เบา หัวและหน้าท่อนบนปกคลุมด้วยขนสีเทาเข้ม ตาสีเขียวปนน้ำตาล จมูกกลมสีชมพู หน้าท่อนล่างสีขาวสะอาด หนวดยาวสีขาวทำให้หน้าโก้เก๋ มันส่งยิ้มให้ผมด้วยท่าทางพอใจที่ผมชมว่ามันหล่อ

    ผมนึกรักเจ้าแมวลายเทาตัวนี้เสียแล้ว...ถึงตัวจะผอม ขนจะสั้นเกรียน แต่ก็นุ่ม อุ่น น่ากอด น่ารักกว่าแมวทองเหลืองอย่างเปรียบกันไม่ได้เลย

    ผมอุ้มเจ้าเทาลงไปหาพ่อกับแม่ ประกาศว่าแมวมาหาผม วันเกิดต้องให้ผมเลี้ยงแมวตัวนี้ พ่อกับแม่ตื่นเต้นลูบคลำเจ้าเทาสักครู่หนึ่ง แล้วพ่อบอกว่า แมวสะอาดรูปร่างดีแบบนี้ คงเป็นแมวมีเจ้าของดูแล ดังนั้นผมจะยึดมาเลี้ยงเฉยๆ ไม่ได้ ต้องประกาศหาเจ้าของก่อน ถ้าไม่มีเจ้าของมารับคืน ผมถึงจะเลี้ยงมันได้

    "ไปเอากล้องมาถ่ายรูปมันหน่อย แล้วพ่อจะทำประกาศเอาไปติดที่ร้านในหมู่บ้าน"

    ผมจำยอม วิ่งขึ้นบ้านไปหยิบกล้องถ่ายรูปของพ่อลงมาให้พ่อเป็นช่างกล้อง ถ่ายรูปเจ้าเหมียวแมวเทา มันแสนรู้น่ารัก กระโดดขึ้นไปยืนหลังตู้เคียงคู่รูปปั้นแมวทองเหลืองทันที เมื่อเห็นพ่อหยิบกล้องขึ้นมา

    พ่อทำป้ายประกาศแมวใครหายไปติดที่ร้านขายของ ร้านซักรีด สโมสรกีฬา และร้านคุณหมอเด่นดวงที่หน้าหมู่บ้าน วันแรกผมใจหายใจคว่ำ กลัวจะมีคนมาขอรับเจ้าเทากลับไป แต่เวลาผ่านไปหลายวัน ไม่มีใครมาติดต่อเลย เจ้าเทากลายเป็นสมาชิกประจำบ้านของเราไปแล้ว

    บ่ายวันเสาร์ ผมกลับจากซ้อมฟุตบอล เห็นคุณหมอเด่นดวงกับผู้ชายตัวสูงใหญ่คนหนึ่ง นั่งคุยกับพ่อแม่ในห้องนั่งเล่น คุณหมออุ้มเจ้าเทาที่นั่งหลับตาพริ้มอยู่บนตัก

    ผมใจหายวาบ เจ้าของมาทวงเจ้าเทาคืนแล้วหรือ

    "ไม่ใช่ๆ คุณทักษ์ไม่ใช่เจ้าของแมว" พ่อเห็นสีหน้าผมก็เข้าใจ รีบแก้ความเข้าใจผิดทันที

    "รูปหล่อแมวนี่เป็นฝีมือคุณช่วง ชลชีพ ศิลปินเอกของชาติ" คุณทักษ์ชี้แจง "คุณช่วงหล่อรูปแมวนี้ส่งเข้าประกวดงานศิลปะแห่งชาติ ได้รางวัลเหรียญทอง"

    พ่อกับแม่ซื้อแมวทองเหลืองนี้มาจากร้านขายของเก่าที่ตลาดจตุจักร ราคาไม่แพงหรอก ผมรู้ เพราะถ้าแพง พ่อกับแม่คงไม่ซื้อ

    "ตอนนี้ พวกเศรษฐีกำลังแข่งกันสะสมงานฝีมือคุณช่วง มีคนมาถามหารูปหล่อแมวนี่ที่ร้านผมหลายคนแล้ว ถ้าคุณสนใจขายผมขอรับเป็นคนประมูลขายให้เองครับ"

Birthday present

     This year I got a cat for a birthday present. But it was not a flexible cat that would run up, and rub against my leg when I called its name. It was a bronze statue of a cat leaping up to catch a small ball. As beautiful and lively as it looked, the bronze cat was hard and cold to the touch. It was not warm and fluffy like a real cat.

    I pretended to be excited about this bronze cat When I unwrapped the present and lifted the bronze statue from the box. I had to --- I didn't want to upset my parents.

    Tom is my best friend. His birthday was two days ago. He got a Star Wars light sabre for his birthday. I told my parents what Tom got for his birthday more than ten times! Why didn't they understand that I also wanted a Star Wars light sabre? Not only was I disappointed on my birthday, Tom was also very upset You need more than one light sabre for a fight.

    I left the bronze cat on the sideboard in the living room, and sadly climbed upstairs to my room. I sat down at the desk, staring at the English exercise book lying open in front of me. Homework! The more you do, the more you get. We students were so bored to do it, but surprisingly the teachers never got bored correcting it. They continued to give us more and more each day.

    Scratch!

    What made those scratching noises on the window screen? I turned to look. On the windowsill, a grey tabby stood close to the screen. The scratching sound came from its claw scraping the screen.

    I opened the window, and the slim grey tabby with a long lean tail jumped into the room. It ran to rub against my leg as cats usually like to do.

    I lifted the grey tabby up to examine it closely. It was a tomcat. A handsome tom. His face as covered with dark grey hair. His eyes were brownish green, his nose round and pink.

The lower part of his face was bright white with long white whiskers that gave him an elegant look. The tabby, pleased that I judged him handsome, gave me a big smile.

    I loved this grey tabby... Although slim with short hair, the cat was soft, warm, and nice to hug. He was much, much cuter than the bronze cat.

    I carried the tabby downstairs, annoucing to my parents that the cat visited me on my birthday; therefore I had the right to keep him. Excited, my parents petted the grey tabby for a while. Then Dad said that a sleek clean cat like this must have an owner. Thus, I couldn't claim owership right away. I had to try to find his real owner first. But if I couldn't, I could keep him.

    "Fetch me the camera, please, I'll take his picture and make flyers to post at the stores in our housing estate."

    I had no choice but ran upstairs to fetch Dad's camera. As Dad picked up the camera, the cute and clever taby jumped up on top of the sideboard, and stood next to the bronze cat statue.

    Dad made many lost-cat posters and posted them at the grocery store, the dry-cleaner's, the sport club, and Dr. Denduang's clinic in front of the estate. The first day I was really worried, afraid that someone would come to claim the grey tabby. But after no one had come for it, the grey tabby became a member of our family.

    When I returned home from the soccer practice on Saturday afternoon, I found Dr. Denduang and a big tall man chatting with my parents in the living room. The sleeping tabby was on the doctor's lap.

    My heart started. Were they the tabby's masters?

    "No, no. Khun Phitak isn't the cat's owner." Seeing my face, Dad understood right away and quickly corrected my misunderstanding.

    "Khun Phitak is a friend of Dr. Denduang's. He saw the picture of the grey tabby along side the cat statue, so he came to look at the statue."

I just noticed that they had brought my bronze cat with a ball from the sideboard to the coffee table in front of the sofa.

    "This cat statue was made by Khun Chuang Chonlacheep, one of Thailand's leading artists," Khun Phitak explanined. "Khun Chuang cast this cat statue and entered it in a national art competition. He won the first prize."

    My parents had bought this bronze statue from an antique stall at Jatujak weekend market. I knew that it didn't cost much. If it were expensive, my parents wouldn't have bought it.

    "Recently many rich people have been collecting Khun Chuang's artwork. Several collectors have been asking me about this cat statue. If you want to sell it, I'd like to take care of it."

    My parents and I looked at each other. We couldn't make a decision right away. We discussed it for a while. Eventually we decided to keep only one cat in our home. Can you guess which cat we chose?

A mother who is diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) during pregnancy, if the glucose level is low, the mother can do self-treatment by controlling diet and the doctor shall make appointments constantly in order to monitor the glucose level to prevent the severe diabetes (Whether the mother is diagnosed with diabetes before or after the pregnancy, the aim of glucose level control is the same which the glucose level needs to be control prior to every meal and it needs to be under 95 mg/dl, the glucose level 1 hour after meal has to be under 140 mg/dl and the glucose level 2 hours after meal has to be under 120 mg/dl[3])
If the symptoms of diabetes become more severe, the doctor will ask the mother to be treated in the hospital in order to get injected with insulin hormone to control the glucose level. The mother is unable to take the medication in pills to treat diabetes as it might be risky to the disability of the fetal (Some pills can be taken for the patient who refuses the injection such as Glibenclamide and Metformin but the outcomes are not as good as insulin[3])
When the doctor can control the glucose level to the normal level, he or she will instruct the mother on how to do a self-treatment when at home. The fetal will also be checked regularly and more frequently than a normal pregnancy in order to prevent any harmful complications that might occur to the mother and the fetal. During the pregnancy, the mother will be advised to follow the following recommendations:
1.    Follow doctor’s advice: A pregnant woman must strictly follow the doctor’s advice and recommendations.
2.    Control diet in suitable proportion and timely: Dietary control is really important for a patient who is diagnosed with gestational diabetes otherwise the treatment won’t be effective. If the mother fails to control the glucose level, the death risk of the fetal as well as life threatening to the mother will be higher. A woman with normal pregnancy shall eat 3 main meals a day and 2 light meals a day. Most importantly is the amount of daily diet that need to be properly controlled. The mother should reduce the amount of carbohydrate  intake and change to brown rice and wheat flour instead; increase the protein intake (low-fat meat) and eat a variety of vegetables (Especially the vegetables that are rich in fiber and vitamins. The root vegetables and grains are high in carbohydrate, protein and provide more energy than the leafy vegetables.) For fruits, it’s better to each fresh fruits than fruit juice (for more fiber). Unsweetened milk and skim milk should be consumed (as it is rich in protein and calcium) and sweets, alcoholic drinks, high sodium and high fat food should be avoided (Use vegetable oil such as rice bran oil, olive oil or sun flower oil for cooking instead.)
3.    Regular exercise is recommended: Exercise is vital for a woman diagnosed with gestational diabetic during pregnancy as it can helps reduce the risk of insulin resistance. Therefore, the mother should exercise if there are no limitations such as high blood pressure; the fetal is in high risk of preterm birth or miscarriage. The purpose of exercise is not for losing weight but for maintain the wellness. The recommended exercises are walking or jogging, swimming, dancing or exercise on upper part of the body for 30 minutes a day. However, this depends on the doctor’s recommendation.
4.    Always come to the doctor’s appointments: During the pregnancy, the doctor might make appointments more frequently in order to check up the overall health of both the mother and the fetal and monitor the glucose level so the doctor will be able to evaluate and adapt to a proper treatment plan.
5.    Treatment with insulin injection only: In some cases, the patient need to be injected with insulin several times a day.
6.    In case of abnormalities: In these abnormal cases; the mother becomes fatigue or gains excessively weights; the womb doesn’t increase its size; the fetal doesn’t move or stops moving; symptoms of toxemia of pregnancy occurs or other abnormalities occur (such as Diabetic Retinopathy), the mother must see the doctor immediately.
